
Thompson Named Interim Head Coach At Cal State-Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Former Syracuse men's basketball standout Stephen Thompson was named interim head men's basketball coach at California State-Los Angeles on March 15. Thompson replaced retiring head coach Dave Yanai.
Thompson has spent the last three campaigns as an assistant on Yanai's staff. Prior to that he was Athletic Director for the Coast Christian School in Redondo Beach, Ca.
He had a stellar four-year career at Syracuse. Thompson still owns the school record for games played (144), and ranks sixth in career scoring (1,956 points), second in career field goals (801), and fifth in career field-goal percentage (.560). He played on four squads that advanced to the NCAA Tournament including three trips to the "Sweet 16" and won BIG EAST Conference titles in 1987 and 1990.
Thompson earned All-America recognition from the Associated Press and Sporting News in 1989 and 1990. He was the BIG EAST Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1990.
He played 19 NBA contests with the Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings in 1992-92 and went on to play professionally in Europe, Japan, the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), American Basketball Association (ABA) and the Southern California Pro League.
Thompson and his wife, Amy have two children: Stephen Jr. and Ethan.
