ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A bases-loaded double by Tanya Rose in the top of the second inning propelled the Syracuse softball team (11-9) to a 6-1 victory versus Lehigh on Wednesday, March 30. The SU victory stopped the Mountain Hawks’ (18-4) 13-game winning streak.
Rose’s double was part of a five-run second inning for the Orange. A single by Alexis Switenko, a double by Courtney Mosch and a walk by Shawna Norris loaded the bases. Switenko plated the first run of the game, scoring from third on a wild pitch. After another walk by Tiffany Robinson, Rose cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to put the Orange ahead, 4-0. Chanel Roehner drove in the fifth run of the inning with a single through the hole at shortstop.
Rose went 2-for-4 with the three runs batted in and a run scored. Roehner registered two hits and two RBI to extend her team-best hitting streak to five games. Switenko also singled and scored. Jaime Grillo recorded her second double of the season and scored a run.
Mosch was the winning pitcher for the Orange to improve to 6-5. Mosch pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits. She struck out two and walked two. Erin Downey earned her school-record fourth save of the season. Downey pitched three hitless innings, striking out six. She did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield.
The Mountain Hawks scored their first run in the home half of the third. Jessica Young earned an RBI with a two-out single to center with runners on first and second.
SU went back on top by five with a run in the top of the seventh. Grillo led off with a double and came around to score on a double by Roehner to make the score 6-1.
Syracuse will play its first home game, and first BIG EAST game, on Friday, April 1 when it hosts Connecticut. The doubleheader gets underway at 4 p.m. The Orange also has a home twin bill with Providence on Sunday, April 3 at noon.
