FAIRFAX, Va. - The Syracuse softball team (4-2) will be back in action at the George Mason Patriot Classic on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6. SU will take on Cornell, George Mason and Albany twice.
Despite not playing since Feb. 20, the Orange continued to receive votes in this week's national polls. SU's last competition was a 10-3 victory versus South Carolina in the championship game of the Sunshine State Tournament hosted by Florida State.
Freshman Chanel Roehner leads the team in hitting with a .350 batting average. She has three doubles, a home run, and has knocked in four runs. Senior Shawna Norris is also hitting above .300 at .333. Sophomore Courtney Mosch is batting .294 with a team-leading two home runs, while junior Alexis Switenko has six RBI, including a school-record five in the win against the Gamecocks. Senior Tanya Rose has scored a team-high five runs. She also has a double, triple and hit the game-winning home run in SU's 2-1 win against #15 Florida State.
Mosch has factored into all of the Orange's games from the pitching circle. She is 3-2 with one save and has a team-best 1.64 ERA. Freshman Erin Downey is 1-0 with an SU single-season record two saves in her first four collegiate appearances.
This weekend's tournament has a New York flavor. SU opens play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Cornell. The Big Red, the defending Ivy League champs, will be making its season debut. SU and CU have split eight prior meetings. Syracuse will also face Albany at 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Despite the close proximity, the two teams have never played. Syracuse is 40-12 all-time against teams from the Empire State.
Syracuse ends tournament play on Sunday at 1 p.m. versus the host Patriots. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
