SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women’s basketball coach Keith Cieplicki has announced that Cintia Johnson of Nottingham High School in Syracuse has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Orange beginning in 2005-06. Johnson is the fourth player to commit to SU for next season.
Johnson, a guard, recently completed her senior season with the Bulldogs, helping the squad to its first state championship in 14 years. Johnson was named MVP of the state tournament, leading the Bulldogs with 18 points in their championship game victory.
“We are very excited to have a player that has been part of the Syracuse community,” Cieplicki said. “Cintia is a tremendous competitor. She had a great senior season and will add a lot to our program. She is a very quick and aggressive player that plays hard all the time.”
A 1,000-point scorer at Nottingham, Johnson received first-team All-Colonial American honors as a senior and was named fourth-team all-state by the New York state sportswriters and coaches. As a junior in 2003-04, she was named to the Syracuse Post-Standard’s All-Central New York team.
Johnson played varsity at Nottingham since her seventh-grade year, helping the Bulldogs win five consecutive Section 3 championships. She was named the MVP of the sectional championship game as a freshman. Johnson’s mother, Diedre Glenn, also played at Nottingham, helping the team to the 1984 state championship.
Johnson joins Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.), Keri Laimbeer (Orchard Lake, Mich.) and Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wisc.) as a member of SU’s 2005-06 freshman class.
