Morales Named BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior designated player Cassie Morales was named the BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week on Monday, April 18. It is the first time in her career that Morales has won the award and the second straight week an SU player has taken the honor.
Morales played a key role in the Orange’s 7-1 week, including four straight BIG EAST wins. In eight games, she hit .393 with three doubles, two home runs and 11 runs batted in overall. In the Orange’s four league games, Morales hit .692 with two doubles, two home runs, and 10 runs batted in. In the four league wins, she posted a 1.308 slugging percentage with 17 total bases in only 13 at-bats.
In SU’s doubleheader sweep of Providence, Morales went 3-for-5 with four RBI. She followed that with a 6-for-8 effort at Boston College with two home runs, two doubles and six runs batted in. She tied the school record for hits in a game, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and a single in game two versus the Eagles.
For the season, Morales is batting .304. She leads the team with 10 doubles and is tied for the team lead with 20 runs batted in. In BIG EAST play, Morales is batting .457 with five doubles, three home runs and 12 runs batted in. She also owns a team-high .857 slugging percentage.
It is the third time this season that a Syracuse player has been named the league’s player of the week. Shawna Norris won the award on March 10 and April 11. Courtney Mosch was also honored as the conference’s pitcher of the week on February 21.
Syracuse has won eight of its last nine games and stands at 23-13 overall and 8-2 in the BIG EAST. The Orange hosts Cornell on Wednesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
