SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse plays its final regular-season home game against Albany on Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m. The Orange will celebrate Senior Day, honoring 10 members of its senior class and their parents at approximately 6:55 p.m. SU has won five of its last six games and comes into the contest with a 6-4 record. After a convincing 17-6 triumph over Rutgers on April 16, the Orange is tied for seventh with Army in this week’s Geico/STX Coaches Poll.
The Great Danes improved to 8-3 overall with a 16-8 victory against Quinnipiac on April 17. UAlbany is in a virtual tie with UMBC for first place in the America East Conference standings with a 5-0 record. Coach Scott Marr, who will serve as one of John Desko’s assistant coaches on the 2006 U.S. National Team, guided the Albany program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004. His team posted impressive wins this season against now No. 9-ranked Massachusetts (10-9) on March 15 and No. 11-ranked Dartmouth (9-7) on March 29.
The Great Danes will be looking for their fourth-straight victory against Syracuse. They are fourth among the NCAA Division I leaders in scoring offense at 11.73 goals per game. Sophomore Merrick Thomson leads the nation in goals with a 3.64 average, and is second in scoring at 5.00 points per game. He has netted three or more goals against seven consecutive opponents. Luke Daquino ranks third in scoring (4.36 ppg) and fourth in assists (2.36) among NCAA leaders. He is seven points away from becoming Albany’s all-time leading point scorer. He currently has 212 career points. Senior goalie Kevin Rae is 20th among NCAA leaders in save percentage (.583). He had a career-high 24 saves, including 11 in the third quarter, in a 10-9 upset victory against UMass.
