KANSAS CITY, MO -- Senior forward Hakim Warrick added another All-American honor to his postseason collection with his selection to the Senior Class Award All-Senior All-American Team. Warrick, a first-team pick, was named by the Senior Class Award Organizing Committee.
The State of Kansas swept the two top honors in national balloting for the 2004-05 Bayer Advantage® Senior CLASS Award. Wayne Simien of the University of Kansas was the men’s winner and Kendra Wecker of Kansas State University was the female recipient of the award presented annually to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I basketball player.
The Senior CLASS Award - an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School - was launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the recent trend of college basketball players leaving college early to turn professional.
Simien and Wecker will be presented with their awards at the CLASS Tribute Gala on April 30, 2005 at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The multi-media awards dinner is hosted by the Pride of Kansas City Foundation.
National balloting was conducted during the month of March by three separate voting entities - a National Media Committee that covers college basketball, Division I college basketball coaches, and nationwide fan balloting. The names of ten Finalists, which were selected from a list of 30 nominees by the media committee, appeared on the ballot.
A points system combined the votes for these groups and determined the national winner of the Bayer Advantage® Senior CLASS Award. Simien captured first place in all three voting groups, outdistancing Vermont’s Taylor Coppenrath in the overall standings for the men’s award. Wecker finished first on the media ballot and the fan vote, and tied LSU’s Jacqueline Batteast on the coaches ballot, to gain the overall first place spot.
Based on results from the balloting, the SCA Organizing Committee also announced the men’s and women’s All-Senior All-American Teams for 2004-05.
Joining Simien and Warrick on the men’s First Team were Taylor Coppenrath of Vermont, Travis Deiner of Marquette, and Chris Thomas of Notre Dame. The Second Team included Joey Graham and John Lucus III of Oklahoma State, Lawrence Roberts of Mississippi State, Duke’s Daniel Ewing, and Gonzaga’s Ronny Turiaf.
