
Women's Lacrosse Welcomes No. 13 Cornell

No. 17 Syracuse (6-2, 1-1) looks to continue its four-game winning streak when it welcomes No. 13 Cornell (4-3) into the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. The Orange will also be looking to capture its first win against a ranked opponent this season. SU is 0-2 when facing an opponent in the top 20 so far this season, losing to No. 5 Virginia and No. 4 Georgetown.
Orange 2-0 Against The Ivy’s This Season
Syracuse plays its second-consecutive game against an Ivy League opponent, and the third of four games this season. The four games the Orange plays against Ivy League opponents is the most against any conference besides the BIG EAST Conference (5), and the most games against the Ivy League than in any previous season. The most Ivy League schools that the Orange had faced previously was three in 2002 and 2003.
Overall, Syracuse has an 9-9 record against the Ivy League during the seven-plus seasons of the program. The Orange has defeated Harvard, 10-4, and in its most recent outing, Brown, 19-6, so far in 2005.
Cornell has won three of its last four, including two ranked foes, defeating No. 13 Ohio State, 13-11, No. 14 Penn, 12-10, and Colgate, 14-11. In its most recent outing, the Big Red lost to No. 4 Princeton, 9-8, in the second-overtime on April 2. Overall, Cornell is 3-2 against ranked opponents this season.
The Big Red are averaging just 9.66 goals per game this season. By comparison, the Orange is averaging 13.62 tallies per outing. Kristen Smith is the Big Red’s top points and goal scorer. She has recorded 18 points this season and 15 goals. Allison Schindler is Cornell’s top feeder with six assists.
Goalkeeper Maggie Fava has started all seven of the Big Red’s games and has made 52 saves. She is allowing 9.89 goals per game this year.
The Syracuse-Cornell Series
Syracuse is 4-4 all-time against the Big Red, but owns a perfect 3-0 record in games contested in Syracuse. The two squads have met at least once in the seven full seasons of SU’s women’s lacrosse program, including two matchups in 2002. That year, Cornell posted a 13-6 victory against the Orange in the regular season and a 16-8 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
In 2004, Cornell’s Kristen Smith scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 left to play in the fourth overtime as the Big Red upset Syracuse, 13-12, at Schoellkopf Field.
The game spanned 73:21, the longest game in Syracuse women’s lacrosse history and it marked the Orange’s first overtime contest since an 8-7 extra-frame loss to Maryland on March 8, 2003.
Leigh-Ann Zimmer led the Orange with six points in the game (four goals, two assists) and established a new Syracuse single-season points mark.
