NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Syracuse softball team ended its regular season by losing both ends of a doubleheader at Notre Dame’s Ivy Field, 6-1 and 7-3, on Sunday May 1. The Orange finished the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 27-20 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish improved to 39-11 overall and 14-2 in the league.
Tanya Rose led the SU offense with three hits and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Her first-inning single in game two was the 200th hit of her career. Rose is the first player in school history to reach the 200-hit plateau.
Cassie Morales had four hits on the day, including her team-best 14th double in game one. Alexis Switenko drove in three of the Orange’s runs in the twin bill on a sacrifice fly, a squeeze bunt and an infield single. She had two hits in game two. Shawna Norris also netted an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
Tiffany Robinson singled in game one to extend her school-record hitting streak to 16 games, but was held hitless in the nightcap.
Erin Downey (16-9) took the loss for Syracuse in the opener, allowing six runs on 11 hits. She struck out two and walked two. Steffany Stenglein (19-5) was the winner, scattering three hits. She struck out 11 and walked six.
Courtney Mosch (10-11) was the losing pitcher in game two, allowing seven runs on six hits in two-plus innings. Downey pitched four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Heather Booth (18-6) was the winner, allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings.
Notre Dame led from start to finish in the first game. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with one out in the third inning. Kellie Middleton then delivered a three-run triple. The Orange recorded an out when Middleton tried to steal home on the play, but SU threw her out at the plate.
The Irish padded its lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Middleton delivered her fourth and fifth RBI of the game with a double to center. She was thrown out on the play trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Notre Dame made it 6-0 in the sixth when Mallorie Lenn dropped a run-scoring single into center field.
Syracuse scored its only run of the game in the top of the seventh. Rose was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a throwing error by the UND shortstop. Switenko drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.
SU left 10 runners on base, including six in scoring position. The Orange loaded the bases in the second and the fourth, but strikeouts ended each rally.
The Orange scored first in the second game with a run in the top of the first. Singles by Rose and Morales put runners on the corners with one out. Switenko then dropped down a squeeze bunt to make it 1-0 SU.
Notre Dame came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. Lenn drove in the run with a ground ball fielder’s choice.
SU responded with a run in the third. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases and Switenko delivered with an RBI infield hit to give the Orange a 2-1 lead. Syracuse left the bases loaded after two pop ups and a strikeout.
The Fighting Irish batted around in the home half of the third, plating six runs. Carrie Wisen delivered a three-run double to put Notre Dame ahead 4-2. Liz Hartmann followed with a two-run single to put the Irish ahead 6-2, and Sarah Schoonaert drove in the sixth run of the inning with a ground out.
Syracuse loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, pushing home one run. Singles by Morales and Mosch, and a walk to Switenko loaded the bases. Norris drove in the run with base on balls to cut the Notre Dame lead to 7-3.
SU has now lost a season-high five straight games. The Orange had previously lost four straight games to ranked opponents in March.
Today’s doubleheader concluded the Orange’s regular season. SU will participate in the BIG EAST Tournament beginning May 12 at the Belleville Softball Complex in South Bend, Ind.
