HANOVER, N.H. – The 12th-ranked Syracuse women’s lacrosse team held an early lead against No. 4 seed Dartmouth, but a five-goal Big Green run to begin the second half helped lead Dartmouth to a 9-8 victory against the Orange in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
With SU leading, 7-4, at the half, Dartmouth opened the second half with five unanswered goals to quickly retake the lead, 9-7, with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Freshman Allison Furstenburg scored SU’s only goal of the second half at the 45:32 mark cutting the Big Green margin to 9-8.
Syracuse had a chance to tie the game during the final minute but an unfortunate Orange turnover gave the Big Green the ball back and Dartmouth was able to run the clock out.
Syracuse won the opening draw control and had the first two offensive possessions, but it was Dartmouth that got on the scoreboard first as Katieanne Christian scored for the Big Green three minutes into the game.
After following behind, 2-0, senior Courtney Palladino won the draw control for the Orange and senior Caitlyn Dragon scored off the assist from Furstenburg. Dartmouth quickly answered with a score 30 seconds later. The Orange got the margin back to one goal after sophomore Jill DePetris tallied a goal for Syracuse, and the junior Meghan O’Connell evened the game, 3-3, at 11:04.
After a Dartmouth tally by Christian to make the score 4-3 with 18 minutes remaining in the half, SU finished the period on a 4-0 run. Junior Melody Agnew evened the score, 4-4, at the 17:47 mark, and DePetris scored her second goal of the afternoon to give Syracuse its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4, at 18:34.
Palladino got into the scoring action netting her first goal of the game with just over four minutes to play before halftime giving Syracuse a two-goal advantage. SU had the final score of the half as O’Connell gave the Orange a three-goal lead with 29 seconds to play, and Syracuse took a 7-4 lead into the locker room.
Dragon was Syracuse’s leading scorer with three points, including one goal and two assists. O’Connell and DePetris led Orange with two goals each. Junior Jen Kasel made seven saves for the Orange.
Christian led the Big Green with five goals.
Syracuse concludes the 2005 season with a 12-5 overall record. Dartmouth will play the winner of the Towson-Georgetown game on Sunday, May 15.
