Women's Soccer Set to Kick off BIG EAST Play

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse Orange will kick off BIG EAST play on Saturday when it travels to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on St. John’s at 3 p.m. The game will be the first BIG EAST game for both teams, with the Orange coming in with a record of 1-5-0, while St. John’s is 3-3-0 in non-conference play this season.
SU has found itself on the short end of some tough breaks thus far, losing two one-goal games at home, while letting a couple others get away according to head coach Patrick Farmer.
“Our main problem has been finishing chances,” Farmer said. “For the most part we’ve created a great number of chances. We need to take advantage of the chances we’re creating for ourselves. We need a little more concentration around goal and a just a little more fierceness around goal.”
The Orange enters Saturday’s game coming off a pair of losses at the New Mexico Classic this past weekend. Last Friday, the Orange lost to Arizona State 3-1, before losing to New Mexico, 3-0, on Sunday.
Kaitlin LaMothe (Wrentham, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the Orange’s loss to Arizona State. She was named to the All-Classic team for her play in the team’s two games.
Farmer has been pointing to this game as a key match-up for the Orange since the preseason. With the 1-5-0 start, the Orange is looking to start over as the conference season begins.
“I think this game is maybe a little more important that it may seem,” Farmer said. “When you have 11 conference games, putting a lot of pressure on yourself to win the first one isn’t a good tactic I don’t think, but in our case we have to feel that this is a new season. Getting a win right away, especially on the road against someone who we think we’re going to compete with for a BIG EAST (Tournament) berth, will be a great way to start the conference season.”
On the season, Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y.) leads SU in points with three, all coming on assists. Leading goal scorers are Jen Taormina (Liverpool. N.Y.), Molly McManus (Binghamton, N.Y.), Lauren Jentzen (Marshfield, Mass.) and LaMothe, each whom has one goal this season.
Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) has 18 saves this season in her six starts in goal. She has a saves percentage of .600 and a goals against average of 2.00.
St. John’s enters Saturday’s game fresh off its first home victory of the year beating Stony Brook, 1-0, behind Holly Ryder’s game-winning goal.
Ryder leads the Red Storm this season with two goals and one assist, while four others are second in goals scored with one. Jamie Beran and Rebecca Capinera have split time in goal this season. Beran has 11 saves to go along with a goals against average of 0.62. Capinera has 18 saves on the year with a goals against average of 1.51.
Action kicks off at the Belson Stadium in Jamaica, N.Y. at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
