On September 28, 1996, the football Orange beat 16th-ranked Virginia Tech, 52-21, in the Carrier Dome. Offense, defense, and special teams contributed in SU's first win of 1996 and the program's 600th victory ever. The SU victory snapped the Hokies 13 game winning streak, which was the nation's longest at the time. Quarterback Donovan McNabb had 123 yards passing, going 8-for-12, and had 172 yards rushing. Running back Tebucky Jones, who later moved to safety, added 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns. SU's defense recorded three interceptions and two sacks. Antwaune Ponds and Anthony Walker each had seven tackles and Keith Bulluck put the exclaimation point on a great effort by intercepting a pass and running it back 20 yards for a touchdown with just more than three minutes left on the clock. SU punter Sean Reali booted a career-long 70-yard punt, which earned national recognition.
Also on September 28 in the Carrier Dome, the men's soccer team has played Army twice, beating the Cadets 2-1 in 1990 and losing to Army, 2-1, in 1994.
In the 1990 victory, Steve Morris and Paul Young scored goals for the Orange, while in 1994 co-captain Rich Alexander fed a pass to Jamie Shannon, who put it past the Army goalkeeper from 13 yards out for SU's only score.
In 1991, Rod Steward played for a crowd of nearly 24,000 fans.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
