Volleyball Travels To Ohio To Compete In Kent State Invitational

The Orange travels to Kent, Ohio to participate in the Kent Stats Invitational on Sept. 9-10. On Friday, SU plays Robert Morris at 10:00 a.m. and then Eastern Kentucky at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, Syracuse faces Dartmouth at 11:00 a.m. and host Kent State at 6:30 p.m.
This is SU’s second tournament of the 2005 season. Last weekend at the Boston College Tournament, the Orange went 2-1. On Sept. 2, Syracuse beat Maine, 3-1. On Sept. 3, SU won against BC, 3-1, and then lost to No. 3 Stanford, 3-1. Seniors Aila Dommestrup and Kelly Duan were both named to the All-Tournament team. This past Tuesday, SU traveled to Binghamton and won 3-1.
Robert Morris
The Colonials hold a slight edge in the all-time series, 2-1. SU’s lone win came in 2000. RMU has participated in the Akron Early Bird Invitational and the North Florida Tournament and has a record of 3-4.
Freshman libero Alaina Gibson has earned Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors twice this season. Setter Tawnya Storino is averaging over 11 assists per game, and Emily Wolthuis leads the team in kills with 91.
Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels are currently 2-3 and played in the Sands Regency/SBC Tournament last weekend where they lost No. 13 UCLA and No. 18 San Diego. EKU’s wins came at the beginning of the season against Duquesne and Georgia State.
SU holds a 2-1 all-time record against EKU dating back to 1990. The Orange took the first two matches in the series, but the Colonels won the last contest in 1994.
Liz Guard leads EKU at the net, leading the team in kills (64) and blocks (19). Kelly Jennings is averaging 11.27 assists per game.
Kent State
The Golden Flashes own a 1-3 record entering the tournament. Their lone win came against Western Illinois in the Barker GMC Tournament last weekend. KSU’s record against the Orange is 4-1 all-time.
Danielle Holt leads the Kent State attack with a team-best 60 kills. On the defensive side of the net, Sarah Wilber (13), Anne Zakelj (12), and Ashley Feutz (11) all have ten or more total blocks.
