Head coach Jim Boeheim fell just short of what would have been his 50th career BIG EAST victory as the University of Connecticut held on to win 70-68 on this date in 1985.
Rafael Addison led all scorers with 22 points, complimented by six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Michael Brown and Wendell Alexis also reached double figures with 18 and 13 points, respectively.
The two teams played as mirror images of each other in a game that featured eight ties and no more than a six-point advantage for either squad. Syracuse shot 25-of-53 from the floor to counter UConn’s 26-for-52, while from the free-throw line the Orange’s 18-for-23 record nearly matched Connecticut’s 18-for-22.
After a close first half, Syracuse led throughout the second period until the 3:24 mark, when an Earl Kelley lay-up gave the Huskies a 58-57 lead. The Orange managed to tie the game twice in the final minutes but Connecticut’s flawless free-throw shooting down the stretch preserved the win, 70-68.
Syracuse fared better in a 1991 match-up with Seton Hall when Billy Owens’ 24 points led the team to a 78-64 win. Owens also added 14 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a stellar 9-for-10 record from the free-throw line.
The Pirates commanded a 33-26 halftime lead, but Syracuse came out firing in the second half. With 12:47 to go, Mike Hopkins dropped in a lay-up to put SU up by one and give the team its first lead since the 16:11 mark of the first half. Hopkins’ performance sparked the offense, and the Orange would never trail again. SU quickly built a double-digit lead and coasted to a 78-64 victory.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
