The Syracuse men’s basketball squad is undefeated on this date in Carrier Dome history with a perfect 4-0 record. Two of those victories came against opponents ranked in the top 10.
The No. 4-ranked Orange posted its 18th win of the season and remained undefeated with a 63-57 win against St. John’s on this date in 2000. Syracuse relied on an 8-1 run during the closing minutes to secure the victory. Damone Brown, Jason Hart and DeShaun Williams each scored 12 points, while Etan Thomas finished with eight points, a game-high 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.
One of SU’s wins against a top 10 opponent on this date came in 1988 against Michigan. The Wolverines entered the game ranked No. 8, while the Orange was in the 13th spot in the national polls. Michigan took an early lead but the Orange battled back and took the lead for good on Stephen Thompson’s dunk with 2:32 left in the half. The Wolverines rallied in the second half and cut SU’s advantage to three with 10:42 remaining. The Orange answered with an 11-0 scoring run over the next four minutes and went on to an 89-71 victory. Rony Seikaly led the Orange with 33 points. The game featured two of the top players from the state of Michigan’s 1986 graduating class, SU’s Derrick Coleman and the Wolverines’ Terry Mills. Coleman finished with 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and six steals. Mills, who beat out Coleman for Michigan’s “Mr. Basketball” award, scored 21 points, pulled down five rebounds and recorded four assists.
In 1993, No. 9 Seton Hall came to the Dome to face the Orange. Lawrence Moten scored 21 points and John Wallace had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead SU to a 76-67 victory. The win improved Syracuse’s record to 13-0 against Seton Hall in the Dome.
Most recently, the Orange defeated Virginia Tech, 76-64. The SU defense was stifling early, holding the Hokies to just two field goals in the first 11:05. SU built a 25-6 lead during that stretch. In the second half, Virginia Tech slowly climbed back into the game. With SU ahead 51-31 at the 17:34 mark, the Hokies put together a 14-0 run to cut SU’s margin to six, 51-45, at 13:28. SU responded with a 12-2 run of its own to reclaim a 16-point advantage with 8:45 left. Gerry McNamara led SU with 26 points. His six three-pointers in the game moved him past Jason Hart and Adrian Autry on SU’s career three-point field goals made list.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
