The Carrier Dome has been the site of two Syracuse men’s basketball games on January 6 during the past 25 years. The Orange has split the two games.
In 1982, Erich Santifer scored 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead SU to a thrilling 72-69 victory against Connecticut. A close throughout, the Orange held a 71-67 advantage heading into the final minute of play. With 53 seconds to go, UConn missed a shot but gathered in the offensive rebound. Corny Thompson hit an 18-foot jump shot to cut the lead to 71-69 with 25 seconds remaining. Thompson was fouled on the play by Santifer, sending him to the line for a potential three-point play. He missed the shot and the Huskies quickly fouled Leo Rautins to stop the clock. Rautins hit one-of-two free throws to seal the victory for the Orange.
After winning it conference opener at Pittsburgh in 1990, Syracuse returned home three days later to host Villanova. The Wildcats dealt the Orange its first loss of the season, 93-74. Stephen Thompson scored 20 points to lead SU. Villanova defeated Syracuse twice during the regular season, but the Orange avenged the two defeats by beating the Wildcats, 73-61, in the semifinals of the 1990 BIG EAST Tournament. Syracuse defeated Connecticut the next night to win the conference championship.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
