Syracuse, N.Y.- Syracuse and Rutgers played over 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, but Jennifer Anzivino netted the game-winner for Rutgers 1:35 into the second overtime period. Freshman goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made seven saves for the Orange.
Rutgers controlled the ball for much of the first half, registering six shots. In the second half, the Orange had more opportunites on the offensive end. Sophomore Amanda Arcuri and sophomore Tessa MacDougall were very active on the front line for Syracuse. Arcuri had the play of the night for the Orange, connecting on a shot to the upper left corner that Rutgers goalkeeper Erin Guthrie dove for and knocked out of bounds for her only save of the game. The Orange again had a strong offensive opportunity when junior Jen Taormina had one of her team-high three shots blocked by a Rutgers defender.
The Orange came out hard in the first overtime, taking two shots within the first two minutes. MacDougall collected a loose ball inside the box and put a low shot off the left post. In the second overtime, after a Syracuse charge, Rutgers put the ball on net, only to have it punched out by Bennett-Hattan. Gina DeMaio collected the ball for Rutgers and found Anzivino who blasted a shot under the crossbar to win the game.
The Orange (2-11-3, 1-6-1 BIG EAST) hosts Seton Hall (6-7-2, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game can be seen live on Orange All Access.
