New York, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team is set to begin the 2006-07 season after participating at BIG EAST Media Day in New York City. Head coach Quentin Hillsman, senior guard Ashley McMillen and junior center Vaida Sipaviciute attended the festivities and interacted with the media about the upcoming season.
The event was the first that Hillsman attended as head coach. Last week, Hillsman was promoted from interim head coach to head coach. Syracuse returns four starters from the 2005-06 squad, including Sipaviciute who earned BIG EAST accolades last season. She was named to the all-conference second team in her sophomore season after leading the Orange with 16.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
Syracuse was picked to finish 15th in the conference coaches poll. Connecticut received 11 first-place votes and was picked first while Rutgers received the remaining five first-place votes and was picked second.
The Orange open the season with exhibition games against Team Adidas and Athletes in Action on Nov. 3 and 8, respectively, at the Manley Field House. The Orange will then hit the road and open the regular season at Penn State on Nov. 12 before returning home to face Cornell at the Carrier Dome on Nov. 15. Tickets are available at the Carrier Dome Box (1-888-DOMETIX) and online (click here).
