Orange Cruises Past Colgate, 66-49

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Orange dominated Colgate throughout the night, defeating the Raiders 66-49 in Hamilton on Tuesday night. With the victory, Syracuse improves to 2-4 on the season.
Freshman Nicole Michael and junior Vaida Sipaviciute both recorded a team-high 16 points. Michael, who also recorded a team-best eight rebounds and a career-high five assists, is the first freshman to lead the team in scoring in four-straight games since Julie McBride accomplished the feat during the 2000-01 season. Junior Fantasia Goodwin matched a personal-best with 14 points in the SU victory. Junior Mary Joe Riley added eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
After an ambiguously slow start, Syracuse found itself trailing 6-2 in the early moments of the ball game. The Orange responded with a 24-4 run. Goodwin kicked off the run with two 3-point baskets as the Orange never looked back. Syracuse connected on 10-of-13 shots (76.9 percent) during the run, including four-of-four from 3-point range, as the Orange built a 26-10 lead. Sipaviciute led SU by scoring 10 points during the run.
After missing four-consecutive shots from the field, the Orange resumed its hot start, scoring the game’s next 12 points as Syracuse stretched its lead to 38-13. The teams headed into intermission with the Orange leading 46-25. SU shot 51.4 percent (18-35) in the first half, including 7-of-14 from 3-point range and was led by Sipaviciute and Goodwin, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Syracuse forced 13 first-half turnovers and held the Raiders to 35.7 percent shooting (10-28). The Orange already matched its season-high in assists with 13 in the first half.
The Orange started the second half right where they left off in the first half. Syracuse used a 12-2 run to extend its lead to 56-27. The Orange cruised after that to the 17-point victory.
Syracuse matched a season-high by shooting 44.6 percent (25-46) during the game. The Orange forced a season-best 24 turnovers, which led to 24 points off turnovers. Syracuse held Colgate (1-5) to 35.8 percent (19-53) during the contest.
The Orange will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday, Dec. 2 when they face Rhode Island in the Brown Classic. The game is set to tip off at 3 p.m.
