The Orange will look to improve on its standing in the BIG EAST this weekend, hosting St. John’s on Friday. Syracuse (11-20, 5-6 BIG EAST) currently is in 10th place in the BIG EAST, one game out for the final berth in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament. The Orange host the Red Storm on Friday at 7 p.m. in the women’s building.

Kaup Sets School Record
Junior Joscie Kaup registered 51 digs last weekend and raised her season total to 595 digs. She set the Syracuse single-season record, passing the previous mark of 567 set by Rachel Watson in 1999. Kaup’s 5.31 digs per game in 2006 is also the best mark in school history and currently leads the BIG EAST. Her career mark of 4.36 digs per game also ranks first in the program’s history and she is second with 1,566 career digs. Watson recorded 1,791 digs from 1996 to 1999. Kaup also ranks among the best in service aces. She is fifth all-time with 0.34 career aces per game and her season total of 0.47 ranks fifth in the conference and is tied for the third-best mark in school history.
Two other SU players rank among the best in the BIG EAST and in Syracuse history. Junior Cheryl Cobbina ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with 4.15 kills per game, which is also the third-best mark in school history. Her 11.94 attacks per game in 2006 is also the highest amount for a single season at SU. Cobbina’s career marks of 3.32 kills per game and 9.24 attacks per game rank fifth and second, respectively.
Sophomore April Quigley has recorded 1,245 career assists, the sixth-highest mark in school history. Her 10.55 assists per game is the second-best mark in school history. In addition, Quigley’s 10.81 assists per game in 2006 rank seventh in the BIG EAST conference and is the seventh-best mark in school history.
Aces Wild
In its last match against Rutgers, Syracuse once again dominated with its serving. For the third time in six matches, Syracuse posted at least 13 aces. Against the Scarlet Knights, the Orange tied a school record with 14 aces in a three-game match. SU also totaled 14 aces against Lehigh in 1996 and Niagara in 2000. The Orange posted 15 aces against West Virginia and 13 against Siena the week before. The school record is 16, set in 2003 against Buffalo. Against West Virginia, freshman Cindy Hand tied a school record with six aces in a four-game match. She tied the mark set by current graduate assistant Kelly Duan against Buffalo in 2003.

The Orange and Red Storm have met every year since 1994 with Syracuse prevailing seven of the 12 meetings. Syracuse has won the last two matches, including a 3-2 (24-30, 30-25, 27-30, 30-23, 15-7) victory last season. The Red Storm had won the previous four meetings prior to 2004.
Scouting the Red Storm
St. John’s owns a record of 25-1 and has won its last 16 matches. Its only loss this season was to No. 10 Southern Cal on Sept. 9. St. John’s has not lost a game since Sept. 24, winning its last 25 games. They have lost only 10 games on the season while winning 75. St. John’s ranks first in the NCAA in kills per game (17.58) and third in assists (16.24). Former Syracuse letterwinner Joanne Persico-Smith is the head coach of the Red Storm. She was a member of the Orange from 1984 to 1986.
