Rommel Receives Honorable Mention Rocognition from Athletes for a Better World

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse lacrosse student-athlete Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) received honorable mention recognition from the committee that votes for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup presented by Athletes for a Better World. Rommel was one of 22 student-athletes from around the country nominated for the Coach Wooden Cup to earn honorable mention honors.
The Coach Wooden Cup is presented to two distinguished athletes – one intercollegiate and one professional – that best display character, teamwork, and citizenship, the attributes Athletes for a Better World deems central to transforming individuals, sport, and society. The award is named after legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden who was one of the most positive role models in NCAA history.
Rommel was a second-team STX/USILA All-American in 2005 before missing the majority of the 2006 season with an injury. He won the 2006 Soladay Award which is the highest honor bestowed upon an active student-athlete by the SU Department of Athletics and also participated in variety of community service projects, worked as an academic preceptor for neuroscience students and served as a volunteer football coach at his alma mater – Henninger High School. Rommel has also donated his time and expertise in a variety of other areas during his collegiate career.
The finalists for the award are Kandia Batchelor of Florida State, Parker Dalton from Texas A&M, Anna Key of California, Eric LeRoux from Princeton and Carl Pendleton of Oklahoma. The winner will be selected on Jan. 25, 2007 at the Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
