Juniors Fantasia Goodwin and Vaida Sipaviciute led the team with 15 points each and posted 10 and eight rebounds, respectively. Goodwin was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 16 points per game in the tournament. Freshman Nicole Michael added nine points and senior Ashley McMillen scored eight.
The first half featured a strong defensive effort from both team. After facing an early 4-0 deficit, Syracuse went on a 13-5 run capped by a three-point play by Sipaviciute. The Orange allowed TCU to hit only two shots (of 13) during the more than eight-minute stretch.
Goodwin extended SU’s lead to seven points at 23-16 after hitting her first 3-point field goal of the evening. The Horned Frogs responded with a run of their own, scoring 10 of the next 11 points. The two teams traded baskets before halftime and Syracuse trailed TCU 28-26 at the intermission.
Syracuse connected on only 24 percent (6-25) of its shots in the first half but hit 11 free throws to remain in the game. The Horned Frogs made 35.7 (10-28) of its shots but only made it to the free throw line five times. Goodwin led the Orange with 11 first-half points.
TCU (7-4) opened the second half strong, scoring the first 13 points after halftime to expand its lead to 15 points. Michael scored SU’s first points of the half with more than four minutes gone from the second stanza to end the TCU run.
Syracuse responded and cut the Horned Frogs’ lead to 10 points at 47-37. However, the Orange would not get any closer after that as TCU tallied 10 of the next 12 points to take control of the game.
Syracuse shot 23.6 percent (13-55) from the field and connected on 24 free throws (of 36). TCU hit 43.4 percent (23-53) for the game and connected on 22 free throws (of 29). Ashley Davis led the Horned Frogs with 18 points.
The Orange returns home and faces a quick turnaround game against Canisius on Friday. The game is set to tip off at noon at the Carrier Dome.
