TEMPE, ARIZ. – The #9/6 Texas A&M Aggies (3-0) outlasted Syracuse, 2-1, on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Tempe Sports Complex. The Aggies’ Megan Gibson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with an infield single.
Sharonda McDonald led off the home half of seventh with a double to centerfield. Orange starting pitcher Erin Downey (San Rafael, Calif.) retired the next two batters, bringing Gibson to the plate. Downey got her to hit the ball on the ground to short, but Gibson beat Alexis Switenko’s (Blue Anchor, N.J.) throw to first and McDonald, running all the way, slid into home with the winning run.
Downey, making her first start of the year, scattered 10 hits over 6.2 innings. She struck out two and walked a batter. Gibson went the distance for the Aggies, allowing six hits and striking out five to earn the win.
Sophomore Chanel Roehner (Simi Valley, Calif.) notched her first two hits of the year and scored SU’s only run.
Texas A&M took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jamie Hinshaw doubled to drive in McDonald, who led off the inning with a single.
The Orange (0-3) tied the game in the sixth when freshman Heather Kim (Boulder, Colo.) knocked in Roehner with a two-out single. It was the third RBI of the year for Kim, who has driven in every SU run so far this season.
Texas A&M threatened in the sixth, but with Aggies on second and third and one out, Downey got pinch hitter Jami Lobpries to pop out to short and struck out Joy Davis to end the inning.
Syracuse got back-to-back singles from Roehner and sophomore Rachel Tilford (Birch Hills, Saskatchewan) in the top of the seventh, but could not plate the go-ahead run.
Tilford’s base hit was her first as a member of the Orange.
McDonald finished the game 2-for-4 for Texas A&M. Amanda Scarborough and Rocky Spencer also had two hits apiece for the Aggies.
SU will take on Cal State Fullerton later today.
