SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshmen Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) and Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) combined for seven goals in their first collegiate game as the No. 13 Orange defeated Harvard, 15-9, in its season opener on Feb. 25 at the Carrier Dome. Rowan netted four goals while Mosenson had three and assisted on another.
Junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) contributed three goals in the win. Senior Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) and junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) both had a pair of tallies. Sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up a career-high 10 ground balls in the game.
SU dominated the first half of play as it outshot the Crimson 23-3 and jumped out to an 8-2 lead before the break. Mosenson got in on the action immediately as she helped Dragon score the first goal of the game 10 minutes in. Kaitlin Martin made the most of a free position shot to notch the game, 1-1, at the 18:24 mark. The freshmen classmates led the Orange charge after the Harvard tally as they combined for SU’s next three goals. Rowan had two of them. After Natalie Curtis cut the run short and pulled Harvard within two, 4-2, the Orange closed out the half by scoring four unanswered goals. Fortune sparked the run with a pair of shots that got past the Harvard keeper.
In the second half, SU secured the win by scoring five of the first seven goals to take a 13-4 lead with 15:25 remaining. Mosenson had two of the goals during that stretch. The Crimson made a late run by scoring five of the next seven goals from the 13:29 marker on. Liz Gamble provided Harvard with three of those goals.
For the Crimson (0-1), Gamble totaled four goals. Kathryn Tylander grabbed seven ground balls and Curtis netted added two goals.
SU (1-0) is back in action on Monday, Feb. 27, when it hosts No. 3 Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. The game is a rematch of the NCAA Tournament first round match up from a season ago that the Big Green won 9-8. The clash will be televised live by Time Warner Sports 26 and is the only game that will be televised this season. Chris Watson and Kathy Taylor will be calling the action.
