PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 27. Switenko became SU’s all-time leader in home runs and runs batted in while guiding the Orange to a perfect 4-0 record at the Breast Cancer Strikeout Classic from Feb. 25-26 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Switenko hit .545 (6-11) with two homers and eight runs batted in at the tournament. She also made two starts on the mound for the Orange and went 2-0, earning the first wins of her career since the 2003 season to improve her season record to 2-1.
Switenko belted two two-run shots and drove in four runs in SU’s 7-3 win against Lipscomb on Feb. 26, tying the Orange individual single-game home run mark. It was the third time in her career she connected for two long balls in a one game. The two round-trippers moved her to top of the SU career home run list with 25, passing Tanya Rose (23) for the career lead. Switenko also pitched a complete game against Bison, scattering nine hits in the triumph.
On Feb. 25, Switenko became the Orange’s all-time leader in RBI, driving in a combined four runs in victories against Middle Tennessee State and Loyola-Chicago. She passed Rose (91 RBI) for the top spot on that career chart as well and now has 96 career runs batted in.
The award was the second conference weekly honor for Switenko, who also earned league player of the week recognition on April 7, 2003.
Syracuse (4-5) continues the 2006 season on Friday, March 3 when it competes against Eastern Michigan and Minnesota on the first day of the Buzz Classic in Atlanta, Ga.
