The Orange’s 19-game unbeaten streak came to an end as Syracuse came up short in its late rally and lost to Seton Hall, 69-67 on this date in 2000. The Orange scored the first two points of the game, but trailed the Pirates for the remainder of the first half and the first eight minutes of the second. Seton Hall’s largest lead of the night, 35-24, came with 1:33 left in the first half. The Orange scored the final six points before the break, and a three-point play by Damon Brown put SU within five at the break, 35-30.
In the second half, Preston Shumpert came off the bench, converted a three-point play and followed that with a lay-up to give Syracuse its first lead since the beginning of the game, 44-43, with 1:08 remaining. Seton Hall used three-point shooting to take control once again and go up by nine, 64-55, with 4:24 remaining. The Orange kept battling, and a pair of free-throws by Ryan Blackwell gave them a 67-66 advantage with 1:07 showing on the clock. SHU’s Darius Lane answered that with a three-pointer with 39 seconds left, and Syracuse could not convert its final attempts to tie the score as Shumpert missed a three-pointer, and Blackwell and Etan Thomas failed to score on rebound shots. Syracuse out-rebounded Seton Hall by a 43-29 margin, but hit just 37 percent of its shots and only 15 percent of its three-pointers.
Thomas finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, and senior Jason Hart led the team with 14 points. Shumpert and freshman Deshaun Williams added 12 and 11 points off the bench, respectively. The game was originally scheduled for January 22, but was postponed following a fatal dormitory fire on the Seton Hall campus.
Another Syracuse-Seton Hall match-up saw the Pirates again get the best of the Orange and come out on top, 85-61, on this date in 1998. Todd Burgan led the Orange with 17 points and Etan Thomas added 13 points and four blocked shots. The Pirates went on a 31-5 run to close out the first half and take control of them game. SU played hard in the second half, but could not overcome its first half deficit.
Syracuse’s 16-game winning streak came to an end on this date in 2005 as the Orange lost to the Connecticut Huskies, 74-66. Hakim Warrick led the Orange with 16 points and seven rebounds. SU had won all 14 home games that season, and boasted a home-win streak that dated back to February 16, 2004, when it lost to Notre Dame.
After leading by just one, 37-36, at the half, an 11-6 run by Connecticut in the opening five minutes of the second stanza put the Huskies ahead by seven, 49-42. Eight unanswered points by the Orange, including four by Gerry McNamara, gave Syracuse a one-point advantage, 50-49, at the 13:24 mark.
Clinging to a 53-52 lead, SU scored eight of the next 12 points. Dunks by Terrence Roberts and Darryl Watkins, sandwiched around layups from Billy Edelin and Josh Pace, put the Orange ahead, 61-56, with 8:17 on the clock.
The Huskies answered by tallying the next nine points, including five from Charlie Villanueva. Edelin and Pace scored in the lane to knot the score at 65-65 with 3:06 left. Connecticut then secured the victory by chalking up nine of the game’s final 10 points. It resulted in the Huskies’ first win in the Carrier Dome since 1999.
Pace had 14 points and six rebounds for the Orange, while Roberts had 12 points and five rebounds before fouling out. McNamara had nine points and six assists.
The Orange also played Connecticut on this date in 1987, but this time came out with a win. Derrick Coleman and Sherman Douglas each scored 14 points to lead the Orange offense. Coleman added eight rebounds while Douglas had seven assists. After an up and down first half, Syracuse never trailed in the second, leading to a 59-53 SU victory.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
