Hernandez Competes In Weight Throw At NCAA Championship

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas) competed in the weight throw at the NCAA Division I 2006 Indoor Championship today, March 10, at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas. She recorded a mark of 18.80m in the event.
Hernandez’s throw tied her for 15th in the field. Jenny Dahlgren of Georgia won the weight throw with a mark of 24.04m.
The nationals capped a stellar indoor season for Hernandez, who earned Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades at the BIG EAST Championship after winning both the weight throw and the shot put.
It was Hernandez’s second Most Outstanding Field Performer award of her indoor career. She also won the accolade in 2003. Hernandez was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 2004 outdoor championship as well. She is the only SU female student-athlete to ever earn the conference award at the indoor championship.
Hernandez won the weight throw at the championship for the third time in her career. She became the first Orange female student-athlete to win the event three times since Kim Johnson accomplished the feat in 1993, 1994, and 1995. Overall, the last BIG EAST student-athlete to win the weight throw three times was Wadudah Nurul-Islam of Connecticut, who did it in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
It also marked the second time in her career that Hernandez swept both throwing events. She also did that in 2003. Since 1990, Hernandez is the only student-athlete in the conference to win both events in two different years.
For her performance at the BIG EAST Championship, she was named the ECAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
At the Syracuse Invitational, Hernandez’s 19.78m weight throw broke the Invitational, Manley Field House, and Syracuse indoor record. Hernandez broke Faith Thompson’s Invitational and Manley Field House record of 19.36m that she set last year. She also topped her own SU indoor record that she set in 2004. Hernandez also won the shot put with a mark of 15.10m.
At the ECAC Championship, Hernandez captured the weight throw crown with a mark of 19.60m. She finished second in the shot put as well.
