BOCA RATON, FLA—The SU women’s tennis team defeated Florida Atlantic, 7-0, on Wednesday in its first of two matches on its spring break trip to Boca Raton, Fla. Junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) won in both singles and doubles to move her career win total to 99. One more win will make her the 25th member of the SU “Century Club”. The Orange improves to 8-3 (2-0 BIG EAST) with the triumph.

Junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) won in both singles and doubles to move her career win total to 99. One more win will make her the 25th member of the SU “Century Club”. The Orange improves to 8-3 (2-0 BIG EAST) with the triumph.
The Orange won the doubles point and has now earned the point in nine straight dual matches. Sophomores Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won 8-6 at number one. At number two, senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) and junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) won 8-4, while Lipton and fellow junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) earned an 8-1 victory at flight three.
SU got off to slow starts in several singles matches in its first outdoor dual match of the season. Vaynberg dropped the first set in a tiebreaker at number one before rallying to win the next two, 6-0,6-1. Zawadzki lost the opening set as well and came back to take the second 6-3. In the third, her opponent was forced to retire at 3-3.
Bramante lost a tight first set at number three before winning the next two 6-3, 6-0, to take the match. Freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Lipton were the only Orange to win in straight sets against Florida Atlantic, winning at flights four and five, respectively. At number six, Leong snuck out a well needed first set tiebreaker as she lost the second, 6-4. The match came down to a third set superbreaker with Leong prevailing 10-8 in the deciding set.
The Orange will next be in action on Friday as it takes on Yale in Boca Raton, Fla. at 10 a.m.
