The Syracuse men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have combined for a perfect 4-0 record in games played in the Carrier Dome on this date. In addition, the Dome hosted NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament action three times in the last six years.
In 2001, the top-ranked men’s lacrosse team in the nation, Princeton, came to the Dome to face the Orange. Syracuse jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 6-3 halftime advantage. SU built its lead to 11-4 before Princeton scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first three goals in the fourth to cut the lead to 11-8 with 9:41 remaining. The Orange responded with three straight goals and went on to a 14-8 victory in front of 10,924 fans. Josh Coffman and Mike Powell each recorded three goals and one assist in the victory.
Syracuse faced another rival on this date in 1990 – John Hopkins. A crowd of 18,244 watched as the Orange pulled away in the third quarter after a tight first half. Holding a 10-8 lead at halftime, SU outscored the Blue Jays, 4-1 in both the third and fourth quarters to post an 18-10 win. Gary Gait led the Orange with five goals, and Greg Burns added four goals. The win was SU’s third of the season. Syracuse went on to a perfect 13-0 record and defeated Loyola in the NCAA Tournament championship game for its third straight national title.
In 1984, Syracuse defeated Penn State, 21-5.
The SU women’s lacrosse squad has played in the Dome just once on this date. In 2001, the Orange hosted Massachusetts. With the score knotted at 3-3 with 17:32 remaining, Syracuse went on a 4-0 scoring run over a span of 12 minutes to take the lead for good. Leading 9-4 at the break, the Orange opened the second half with another 4-0 scoring run and went on to a 15-8 victory. Carrie Soults led the Orange offense with four goals, while Leigh-Ann Zimmer had three goals.
The Dome has been a frequent site of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament action during the past 25 years. In 2000, the East Regional semifinals took place on this date. Florida beat Duke, 87-78, in the one semifinal, and Oklahoma State defeated Seton Hall, 68-66, in the other game. In 2002, Maryland earned a trip to the Final Four, defeating Connecticut, 90-82, in the regional final. Last year, the four participating schools took part in open practices prior to the regional semifinals. Fans gathered to get their first look at North Carolina, Wisconsin, North Carolina State and Villanova.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
