MARIETTA, Ga. – The Orange (6-6) scored seven runs in the first inning and rolled to a 9-0 decision versus Dartmouth (1-3) on Day 2 of the Marriott Buzz Classic at the Al Bishop Softball Complex on Saturday, March 4. SU will meet Winthrop in its final game of pool play at 4:00 p.m.
Rookie Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) went 2-for-2 in SU's half of the first, leading off the frame with single up the middle and a two-run double to left center. After McCorkle’s single, sophomore Chanel Roehner (Simi Valley, Calif.) bunted down to third base, but Erika Owen’s throw squirted by the second baseman Ashley Gleason covering first on the play and McCorkle scored. Roehner also came around to score on the play after Gleason’s throw sailed into center field, making it quickly 2-0. After Cassie Morales (Whittier, Calif.) flied to right, Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J.) belted her third homer of 2006 to increase SU’s lead to 3-0. Freshman Nicole Miller reached on an error and junior Erin Gray (Katy, Texas) followed with a double. Rookie Jorden Rosen (Sugar Land, Texas) drew a walk to load the bases, and after an Amy Kelley (Bend, Ore.) strikeout, sophomore Rachel Tilford (Birch Hills, Saskatchewan) singled to drive in two and McCorkle’s double scored Rosen and Tilford to extend SU’s margin to 7-0.
The Orange tacked on two more runs in the third inning to make it 9-0 on singles by Kelley, Tilford and McCorkle.
That’s all Switenko would need as she tossed her second straight complete-game shutout to improve to 4-1 on the season. Switenko allowed one hit, struck out two and walked four.
McCorkle had her best game in an Orange uniform, going 3-for-3 with a career-best three runs batted in and one run scored. Tilford also finished with two hits, scored twice and drove in two. Switenko’s homer increased her career total to 26, the most in school history and boosted her school-record RBI total to 97.
Dartmouth stranded six runners in the contest. The Big Green had runners reach base in four of the game’s five innings, but Switenko held them without a run.
SU’s game versus Winthrop will mark the 300th in program history.
