BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas) won the weight throw and finished second in the shot put to lead the women to a sixth-place finish (36 points) at the 2006 ECAC Indoor Championship on March 4-5 at the Reggie Lewis Track. Junior Aulton Kohn (Beaufort, S.C.) won his second-straight 55m Dash title at the IC4A Championship at Boston University and totaled 15 of the men’s 16 points as they finished 15th. Kohn and freshman Nana Sang-Bender (Syracuse, N.Y.) both broke a school record today.
Penn State won the IC4A Championship with 71 points while Georgetown won the ECAC Championship with 65 points.
Hernandez won the weight throw with a toss of 19.60m. The second-place finisher recorded a mark of 19.29m. She also finished second in the shot put with a mark of 15.38m. Kohn won the 55m Dash with a time of 6.28 seconds, but it was his 200m Dash performance that broke the SU record. He finished fourth in the event at 21.26 seconds. That mark tops the old record set by Cory Ward in 1996 when he ran the 200m in 21.46 seconds.
The rookie Bender set a new Syracuse record in the mile as she finished in fourth at 4:52.52 seconds. She bested Zelma Jackson’s 2003 record of 4:55.48 seconds.
Other performers who scored at the ECAC Championship were senior Christen Tucker (Oakland, Calif.), who placed second in the 60m Dash, clocking in at 7.68 seconds and sophomore Kathleen Sanborn (Rutland, Vt.) who finished seventh in the 1000m at 2:27.03 seconds. Junior Sheron Mark (Port of Spain, Trinidad) jumped to second place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.31m.
For the men at the IC4A Championship, junior Jake Palas (Asheville, N.C.) finished 10th in the heptathlon with 2430 points to earn the team’s 16th point.
