Women's Soccer Holds End of Season Banquet

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The SU women’s soccer team held its 10th annual end of season banquet for the 2005 season on Saturday night. The 2005 Syracuse Orange earned the school’s first trip to the BIG EAST Tournament since 2000 and won the 100th game in program history when it beat South Florida on Oct. 23. Highlighting the awards given out at the event, senior Sheila Menz (Webster, N.Y.) received the Verhulst Sportswoman of the Year award, while junior Molly McManus (Binghamton, N.Y.) was given the Abbie Bigelow Award for Courage.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) was named the team’s Player of the Year for her outstanding play in goal for the Orange this past season. Kowalczyk recorded two shutouts and had a goals against average of 1.42. She finished her career third on the SU all-time saves leaders list with 190.
Senior Nikki Spartano (Syracuse, N.Y.) was named Outstanding Attacker. Spartano shared the team lead in goals this season with three to go along with one assist. She had one game-winning goal which came in double-overtime victory against Georgetown.
The Outstanding Defender award went to freshman Sarah VanSickle (Darnestown, Md.). In addition, VanSickle was awarded Rookie of the Year honors for her play this season. She started in all 20 games for the Orange in 2005, scoring one goal and assisting on another.
The award for Most Improved Player went to freshman Jill Conaboy (Downingtown, Pa.) who started in 15 games for the Orange in 2005 as a member of a defense that recorded four shutouts.
