PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse freshman Amy Kelley (Bend, Ore.) and senior Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J.) were selected to the conference’s weekly softball honor roll on Monday, March 6. The pair combined to help the Orange to a 4-2 record and a berth in the tournament quarterfinals at last weekend’s Marriott Buzz Classic in Marietta, Ga.
Switenko, who was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 27, hit three solo homers at the tournament and finished the weekend with a .333 batting average (5-15). She drove in four runs in the six games to increase her career RBI total to 100, becoming the first SU player to reach the century mark in runs batted in.
Switenko also finished the tournament with a 2-0 record in the pitching circle. She made two appearances and pitched the first two shutouts of her career, both complete games. She went seven innings in a 5-0 win versus Eastern Michigan on March 3 and tossed five innings in a 9-0 triumph against Dartmouth on March 4. Switenko did not allow an extra-base hit in either game and struck out seven. She took a perfect game into the fifth inning versus Eastern Michigan before it was broken up on a single.
Switenko ranks third on the team in hitting at .324 and leads SU in homers (5) and is tied for the team lead in RBI (12).
Kelley paced the Orange with seven runs batted in at the tournament and hit .500 (3-6) on the weekend. Against Georgia State on March 4, she hit the first pinch-hit home run in team history, belting a grand slam with two outs in the sixth to help the Orange rally for a 7-5 win. Kelley slugged 1.500 and finished the tournament with a .500 on-base percentage. She also clubbed a three-run home run in SU’s win versus Eastern Michigan.
Katie Pierce of Seton Hall claimed Player of the Week honors, while Louisville’s Kady Garrick was tabbed Pitcher of the Week.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, March 10 with games versus Mississippi and Mercer on the first day of the Long Beach State Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.
