COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas) took first place in the hammer throw and the shot put to lead the Orange women to a eighth place finish at the 2006 Terrapin Invitational on April 1 at Kehoe Track at the University of Maryland. Junior Daniel Pribula (Strongsville, Ohio) placed second in the shot put and the discus to help the men to a fifth place finish.
Hernandez won the hammer with a throw of 58.25m and the shot put with a mark of 15.06m. She also finished second in the discus with a throw of 47.47m. All of Hernandez’s scores are NCAA Regional and ECAC qualifying marks. Pribula’s shot put of 16.08m qualifies him for the IC4A Championship. In the discus, he recorded a mark of 45.26m and finished eighth in the hammer at 46.69m.
Maryland won both team titles in the invitational. The Hampton women took second followed by Morgan State. On the men’s side, UMBC placed second with Shippensburg finishing third.
Senior Chris Telesford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the triple jump with a leap of 14.28m and placed fifth in the long jump at 6.77m. Senior Craig Stivala (Colts Neck, N.J.) finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing 4.27m and junior Jake Palas (Asheville, N.C.) placed fifth in the high jump at 1.88m. In the 400m hurdles, freshman Terry Marshall (St. Michael, Barbados) edged classmate Skyy Simmons (Upper Marlboro, Md.) by one second to finish fifth at 55.56 seconds. Sophomore Kyle Heath (Farmington, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 1500m by clocking in at 3:56.22 and sophomore Marcus Vaughn (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed sixth in the 100m hurdles at 14.84 seconds, an IC4A qualifying time.
Junior Sheron Mark (Port of Spain, Trinidad) qualified for the ECAC Championship in the triple jump by finishing third with a score of 11.83m.
