The Syracuse men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have combined for a perfect 5-0 record in games played in the Carrier Dome on this date. The men’s squad averaged 20.5 goals in its four games, while the women’s team posted a one-goal victory in its only game on this date.
Last season the men’s team hosted Albany in the final home game of the regular season. Syracuse entered the game ranked No. 7, while Albany held the No. 13 spot in the national poll. The two teams traded goals for much of the first half, and Syracuse led, 6-5, after two quarters. The third quarter was much like the first two with neither team able to pull away. Brian Crockett scored his fifth goal of the game to give the Orange a 10-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter. After Albany tied the score with the first goal of the fourth, Mike Leveille and Brett Bucktooth scored back-to-back goals to give SU a two-goal advantage. But the Great Danes came back and cut the lead to one with 6:07 left to play. After goalkeeper Jay Pfeifer stopped a shot from point-blank range, the Orange turned the ball upfield. Leveille scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:05 remaining, giving the Orange a 14-12 lead. Albany cut the lead to one with a goal with 1:12 left. The Great Danes won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout. When play resumed, Albany got off a shot with 28 seconds left, but Pfeifer recorded his 11th save of the day and the Orange was able to run out the clock for a 14-13 win. Pfeifer recorded his 700th career save, becoming just the second player in SU history to reach the plateau.
In 1985, Syracuse scored eight straight goals to start the game and went on to a 24-8 win against Pennsylvania. Sixteen different players scored for the Orange, including Jim Morrissey who led the way with five goals and an assist. Syracuse broke open a one-goal game by outscoring Rutgers 13-0 in the second quarter in a 27-17 victory against the Scarlet Knights. Tom Marechek scored a game-high six goals, while John Zulberti dished out seven assists. The Orange shutout Colgate in the first and third quarters as it posted a 17-5 victory on this date in 1986. Zulberti and Tom Korrie each scored three goals and dished out two assists in the win.
The women’s squad hosted Boston University on this date in 2000. Karen Healy scored both of her goals in the first half, including one with six seconds left on the clock, helping SU to a 5-2 halftime lead. Katrina Hable found the back of the net for Syracuse’s final goal of the game with 23:03 left in the game. The Syracuse defense was then tested as the Terriers had 11 shots on goal in the second half, scoring on three of those attempts. SU goalkeeper Carla Gignon withstood the challenge, recording 11 saves, as the Orange held on for a 6-5 victory. It was Syracuse’s 10th straight victory. SU finished the 2000 regular season with a 12-3 mark and earned its first-ever invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
