Orange Takes Six Events At Last Weekend's New York Relays

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange took a total of six events at the New York Relays last weekend at Icahn Stadium in New York. The women provided four of the wins, including Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas), who won the discus throw and came in second in the hammer.
Hernandez won the discus with a mark of 50.37m and recorded a throw of 55.50m in the hammer, both NCAA Regional qualifying throws. Junior Candace Ince (Port of Spain, Trinidad) won the mile run with a time of 5:11.15. The 4x400m relay team of freshmen Amanda Pope (Springfield, Mass.), Kelly Whiteneck (Brodheadsville, Pa.), Stacie Boyle (Cupertino, Calif.), and sophomore Keisha Townsend (San Jose, Calif.) won by clocking in at 4:00.05. Junior Kyra James (Danbury, Conn.) won the shot put with a throw of 12.85m and classmate Dan Pribula (Strongsville, Ohio) won the discus with a mark of 45.64m. He also placed second in the hammer throw at 46.63m. Senior Sarah Bentley (Schenectady, N.Y.) captured the pole vault title by clearing 3.31m. Finally, senior Joshua Johnson (Columbia, S.C.) won the triple jump with an IC4A qualifying leap of 14.98m.
For the women, Townsend added a second place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.56 seconds. Freshman Lauren McClenney (Ellicott City, Md.) placed second in the 400m hurdles with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:01.48 and senior Alisha Ricardi (Newton, Mass.) finished second in the pole vault by clearing 2.86m. Freshman Christina Connolly (Altamont, N.Y.) placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.29m while sophomore Jillian Drouin (Corunna, Ontario) finished in second in the shot put at 12.31m. Sophomore Kaity Lambracht (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) placed behind her at 11.59m. Drouin also finished third in the javelin with a throw of 35.40m. Lambracht placed fourth in the event at 32.35m.
On the men’s side, sophomore Marcus Vaughn (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished second in the 110m hurdles with an IC4A qualifying time of 14.56 seconds. Freshman Terry Marshall (St. Michael, Barbados) placed second in the 400m with a time of 53.32 while classmate Skyy Simmons (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished behind him at 53.94 seconds. Senior Brien Flewelling (Unity, Maine) leaped to seconds in the high jump by clearing 2.01m. Junior Jake Palas (Asheville, N.C.) finished third behind him at 1.91m. Sophomore Zach Whalen (Jamesville, N.Y.) cleared 4.41m in the pole vault to finish second and senior Chris Telesford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed second in the triple jump at 14.20m.
Syracuse will compete in a pair of events this weekend as it travels to the Penn Relays on April 27-29 in Philadelphia. On Sunday, April 30, the Orange will also compete in the Big Red Invitational hosted by Cornell.
