The Carrier Dome has hosted a variety of events on this date during the past 25 years, including Syracuse lacrosse contests, a concert and a figure skating show.
The Orange men’s lacrosse squad has played twice on this date, both times against Massachusetts. In 1998, SU shut out the Minutemen in the first half and posted a 12-3 victory. Ryan Powell scored a team-high three goals and dished out two assists. Casey Powell and Matt Cutia both finished with two goals and two assists.
Massachusetts visited the Dome again in 2002. The second-ranked Orange held UMass scoreless for nearly 20 minutes in the first half and got 21 points from its top four attackman in an 18-10 victory. Michael Powell led SU with seven points (three goals, four assists), giving him four straight games with at least four points. Josh Coffman recorded a hat trick with three goals and added two assists. Michael Springer and Brian Nee finished with three goals apiece.
The SU women’s lacrosse team has played just once in the Dome on this date. The Orange hosted top-ranked Loyola in 2003. The Greyhounds took their largest lead of the day, 13-5, at the 49:00 mark. Syracuse responded with four straight goals, including back-to-back goals by Monica Joines, to cut the lead to four, 13-9, with 2:42 left to play. After a Loyola goal, Jessica Trombley scored to cut the lead to four again with 58 seconds left on the clock. Loyola was able to run out the clock to post a 14-10 victory, improving its record to 14-0. Joines, Trombley, Jessica Bell and Cristine Doran finished with two goals each.
Garth Brooks performed in front of a sell-out crowd in the Dome for the second straight night in 1997. Brooks became the first artist to sell out the Dome on consecutive nights. In 1996, the World Tour of Figure Skating Champions stopped in Syracuse for a performance in the Dome. The Billy Graham Crusade took place in the Dome in 1989.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
