SYRACUSE, N.Y.- On Sunday, May 14, Sheila Menz (Webster, N.Y.), one of three Syracuse University student-athletes named to the list of 12 University Scholars, addressed the 16,701 attendees at the 152nd Syracuse University Commencement Ceremony at the Carrier Dome. Menz, a student-athlete on the women’s soccer team at Syracuse, was chosen out of the 12 University Scholars to speak at graduation. University Scholar is the highest level of recognition an SU student can achieve.
Menz’s address to Class of 2006 stressed her great experience at Syracuse through diversity and involvement. Taking a look back on her four years at Syracuse, Menz recalled the 2002-03 men’s basketball national championship run and the scores of Orange on the streets of Syracuse following the championship victory in New Orleans.
She reflected on the devastation left behind from hurricane Katrina and the action Syracuse University took following the devastation saying “The University community felt compelled to act, so we gave what we could – the invaluable opportunity to learn. We opened our doors to 92 Tulane University students for the semester.”
In closing, Menz left her fellow classmates with one token of advice. “Let us take up the challenge, and move the earth.”
