This Day in Dome History: May 2

The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team has a perfect 3-0 record in games played in the Carrier Dome on this date during the past 25 years.

Most recently, the Orange hosted Georgetown in 1998. After three quarters of play, the teams were knotted at 9-9. Syracuse scored three straight goals in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter and went on to a 14-11 victory in its regular-season finale. Matt Cutia scored a team-high five goals for the Orange. Ryan Powell had a goal and six assists, while Casey Powell added two goals and two assists.

Massachusetts visited the Dome on this date in 1992. Syracuse never trailed, scoring the first three goals of the game. The Orange took control of the game with a 6-0 scoring run during the last 4:09 of the second quarter and first 4:04 of the third quarter, giving SU a 17-5 lead. Charlie Lockwood scored three of his four goals during the run. Syracuse maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and recorded a 25-12 victory. Eleven different Orange scored a goal, led by Lockwood’s four goals.

Syracuse first played in the Dome on this date in 1987 when it hosted Pennsylvania. SU extended its winning streak to three with a 12-10 victory against the Quakers.

More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.

In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
