SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four Orange jumpers will take part in the NCAA Regional this weekend, May 26-27, at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. Seniors Joshua Johnson (Columbia, S.C.) and Tatiana Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior Sheron Mark (Diego Martin, Trinidad), and sophomore Jillian Drouin (Corunna, Ontario) will all leap for Syracuse at the event in Greensboro, N.C.
Johnson will be the only male student-athlete to compete for SU at the NCAA Regional. He earned his spot at the regional with a triple jump of 15.14m at Carolina Fast Times on April 15. That mark ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference this season. His next best jump came at the New York Relays a week later. There he recorded a mark of 14.98m.
As a junior, Johnson earned All-BIG EAST honors at the conference championship as he finished third with a leap of 48-5.5 inches. At the 2005 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, he placed fourth with a jump of 14.43m.
Warren and Mark have competed against each other all season. At the conference championship earlier in the month, the pair finished 2-3 in both the triple jump and the long jump, with Mark edging Warren in both events. Both garnered All-BIG EAST accolades for their performances. This weekend, both will be competing in the triple and long jump.
Mark has had an impressive career so far in Orange. As a sophomore, she won the triple jump at the Senior National Championship in Trinidad & Tobago and then finished second in the long jump. She claimed both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championship in the triple jump and finished second in the event at both ECAC championships.
This year, Mark set a new Athletics Field House record in the triple jump at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship with a winning leap of 12.62m at the University of Akron. She also placed second at the ECAC Indoor Championship with a mark of 12.31m. Mark broke the Syracuse record in the triple jump at the conference outdoor championship earlier this month with a mark of 12.99m to finish second. She beat Aprelle Watkins’ 2002 record by 3.25 inches and it is the second best score in the conference this season. Mark also finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.04m, which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST this season.
Last year at the NCAA Regional in Manhattan, Mark finished seventh in the triple jump at 12.77m. She went on to finish 15th in the event at the NCAA Championship.
Warren holds the third (12.69m) and fourth (6.13m) best triple jump and long jump, respectively, in the BIG EAST this season. She has saved her best for last as both marks have come in the last two meets. Warren’s triple jump came at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship and her long jump was achieved at the ECAC Championship two weekends ago. She finished third in both of those events.
Last season at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, she finished fourth in the long jump. She also placed third in the event at the ECAC Championship and second in the triple jump.
Drouin enters the high jump at the NCAA Regional with this season’s best conference mark and the best ever at Syracuse. At the ECAC Outdoor Championship last time out, she broke the school record in the high jump by clearing 1.81m. She bested Jenna Grimaldi’s old record of 1.80m. It is the fifth best jump in the region and the 13th-best high jump in the nation this season.
Drouin has had a spectacular year for the Orange, breaking two other Syracuse records. At the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, she finished sixth in the pentathlon with a new school record 3,627 points. She also won the high jump with a leap of 1.75m. Drouin also recorded a new school record in the heptathlon this outdoor season. The new mark is 5,287 points, which she achieved when she placed second in the event at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
Last summer, Drouin made a splash in the Canadian ranks when she won the Canadian Junior National Championship in the heptathlon and then went on to finish fourth in the event at the PanAm Junior Championships.
The long jump is slated for noon on Friday, May 26, with the triple jump at the same time on Sunday. The high jump is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
