Women In First Heading Into Final Day Of BIG EAST Championship

STORRS, Conn. – The Syracuse women’s track and field team stands in first place after the first full day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the University of Connecticut. Senior Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas) won the shot put for the second time in her career and also finished second in the discus throw. Sophomores Jillian Drouin (Corunna, Ontario) and Kaity Lambracht (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) finished second and third in the heptathlon, respectively, and both topped the Syracuse record which Drouin set earlier in the season.
The SU women have amassed 53 points heading into Sunday’s events. Pittsburgh is in second place with 38 points. The Orange men stand in eighth place with 17 points.
Hernandez won the shot put with a throw of 15.44m and then recorded a mark of 50.43m in the discus. Drouin totaled a school-record 5287 points to finish second in the heptathlon and Lambracht finished with 5095 points to finish behind her. Drouin had set the SU record in the event at the Hurricane Invitational earlier in the season with 4954 points.
Junior Sheron Mark (Diego Martin, Trinidad) and senior Tatiana Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were both impressive in the long jump. Mark finished second with an NCAA Regional qualifying jump of 6.04m and Warren finished right behind her with a leap of 5.96m.
Junior Kyra James (Danbury, Conn.) placed sixth in the shot put for the Orange with a throw of 13.55m and sophomore Liz Cufari (Pittsford, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 10,000m with a time of 36:09.58.
For the men, junior Dan Pribula (Strongsville, Ohio) is the highest finisher so far as he placed second in the shot put with a mark of 16.50m. In the decathlon, junior Jake Palas (Asheville, N.C.) finished with 6369 points to place fourth and senior Craig Stivala (Colts Neck, N.J.) finished in seventh with 6307 points. Junior David Wishart (Winnetka, Ill.) finished eighth in the 10,000m by clocking in at 31:23.19 and senior Brien Flewelling (Unity, Maine) placed eighth in the high jump by clearing 1.94m.
Action on Sunday, May 7, begins at 11:00 a.m. at the George J. Sherman - Family Sports Complex. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:50 p.m.
