Last season, the battle between the Orange and the Bearcats was tight throughout, with the teams trading the lead. Syracuse took a 16-14 lead into the fourth quarter, but Cincinnati returned an Orange fumble for a decisive touchdown late in the game. Syracuse mounted a valiant comeback, moving from its own one-yard line to the Cincinnati 38, but fell jsut short in the end. The Orange look to avenge that loss when it visits Cincinnati for the first time since 2000 and the first time ever as BIG EAST counterparts on October 28 at noon (ESPN Regional). The two schools have split the other two games they have played in Cincinnati and the Orange holds a 4-2 all-time advantage.
In 11 days, Syracuse will take the field. Visit suathletics.com regularly for 'Countdown to Kickoff' to get an inside look at the 2006 season as the excitement builds. OFFENSE
Sophomore quarterback Dustin Grutza returns for his second season as the starter. As a redshirt freshman in 2005, Grutza completed 168 passes for 1,799 yards and 11 touchdowns. Grutza’s primary target will be senior
tight end Brent Celek (below), who caught 32 passes for a team-high 361 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Junior wide receivers Earnest Jackson and Antwuan Giddens each had over 20 receptions in 2005. The Bearcat running attack is headed by a trio of juniors. Bradley Glatthaar led the team with 620 yards and seven touchdowns. Greg Moore was second with 297 yards on 52 carries. Butler Benton gained 287 yards and saw action in all 11 games.
DEFENSE
The Bearcat defense was young and inexperienced in 2005, with six freshman receiving starting time. Defensive end Trevor Anderson and defensive tackle Terrill Byrd return for their second seasons on the defensive line. Between them, they accounted for 15 tackles for loss last season. The linebacking corps returns three of the top four tacklers from 2005. Junior Anthony Williams ranked second (66), followed by sophomore Corey Smith (63), and senior Kevin McCullough (61). Smith earned second team All-BIG EAST and honorable mention
freshman All-America accolades. Junior safety Haruki Nakamura (right) led the team with 76 tackles and two interceptions in 2005. Sophomore cornerback Mike Mickens was second team All-BIG EAST and a freshman All-American. He ranked second in the nation in passes defended and totaled 51 tackles a year ago.

The Bearcats went 2-2 to begin the season, with wins over eastern Michigan and Western Carolina and losses to Penn State and Miami (Ohio). They struggled in BIG EAST play, with their only wins coming against Connecticut and Syracuse. The Bearcats ranked seventh in total offense and eighth in total defense in the BIG EAST in 2005.
