Orange Looks For First Conference Victory at South Florida and Georgetown

The Orange looks to win its first conference match of the year, squaring off against South Florida and Georgetown on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Syracuse (3-15, 0-2 BIG EAST) lost two four-game matches to open BIG EAST play. Syracuse lost its first match to Louisville 3-1 (30-20, 20-30, 30-21, 30-19) and Cincinnati 3-1 (25-30, 30-19, 30-16, 30-23). Louisville, a preseason top 15 team, received votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.
In SU’s game against Cincinnati, junior Joscie Kaup recorded 31 digs and moved into third place in school history with 1,300 career digs. Kaup passed Christen Casey, who recorded 1,284 digs from 2000 to 2003. Kaup ranks first in school history with 4.21 digs per game and her 5.31 digs per game in 2006 are also the top mark by an SU player and rank second in the BIG EAST. She also ranks fifth in the conference with .47 service aces per game.
Junior Cheryl Cobbina is averaging 5.31 kills per game in her last three matches. Her 4.13 kills per game in 2006 rank fifth in the conference and are the third-highest mark in school history. Sophomore April Quigley leads the team and ranks seventh in the BIG EAST with 10.07 assists per game. Freshman Sarah Morton has recorded a team-leading .98 blocks per game.
The Syracuse-South Florida Series
The Orange and Bulls have split four all-time meetings. Syracuse defeated South Florida 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-20) in the schools’ first BIG EAST match. Syracuse also defeated the Bulls in 1990 3-0. South Florida last defeated the Orange in 2002 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-16) and also in 1995 3-0.
The Syracuse-Georgetown Series
In a series that dates back to 1981, Syracuse holds a slight advantage over the Hoyas, winning 17 of 33 matches. The Orange has won the lat three matches in the series, including a 3-0 (30-23, 32-20, 30-22) victory last season. The Hoyas had won the previous five meetings before 2003.
