Orange Lacrosse Gets a Jump on the New Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men’s lacrosse team opened the 2007 season with its first practice on Wednesday, Jan. 10 in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse is ranked third in the initial Inside Lacrosse Poll behind Virginia and Johns Hopkins and is fifth in the preseason Lacrosse Magazine rankings.
The team engaged in some fitness testing, including a timed two-mile run, in the morning then hit the field for the first time in the afternoon. The Orange goaltenders, including returning starter sophomore Peter Coluccini, received plenty of work as the team practiced a variety of shooting and one-on-one drills.
Syracuse will scrimmage Hofstra and LeMoyne at the Carrier Dome on Sunday, Feb. 4, just 25 days away. With so few practice sessions between now and then sophomore goaltender Peter Coluccini knows it’s important to make the most out of each practice session.
“We have to adjust and learn from any mistakes quickly,” said Coluccini. “We get two and a half hours every day and we can’t waste any time.”
SU head coach John Desko is entering his ninth season at the helm of the program. He has guided the Orange to three national championships in his first eight years and he is the NCAA leader in winning percentage among active coaches at .764 (97-30).
“It’s good to get the guys back a couple days before school starts,” Desko said. “It gives us a chance to get some of the little things out of the way like handing out equipment and compliance paperwork. We’ll also see what kind of condition they’re in. We did some of that already and they looked good so we’re ready to go.
“We had a very good fall in terms of evaluation,” Desko said. “There are still some positions we’re looking at and moving some people around, so there’s still a lot of work to do between now and the first game.”
The Orange return three All-Americans in junior attackman Mike Leveille, sophomore middie Pat Perritt and senior defenseman Steve Panarelli. In addition, graduate student middie Greg Rommel, junior defenseman Kyle Guadagnolo, sophomore attackman Dan Hardy and junior middie Steve Brooks were selected as preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. SU’s seven selections was tied for the most of any team in the country.
Syracuse begins its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Hobart at the Carrier Dome. Face-off is 1:00 p.m.
