SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After more than a month layoff, the Orange track and field team returned to action Friday night, hosting the Syracuse Welcome Back Invitational. SU student-athletes recorded 16 wins at the meet.
The event was highlighted by senior Dan Pribula and juniors Ramon Sosa and Marcus Vaughn. Pribula won the shot put, posting an IC4A-qualifying distance of 15.91m. He also finished first in the weight throw with a mark of 15.06m. Sosa and Vaughn both recorded IC4A-qualifying times in the 55m hurdles. Sosa won the event with a time of 7.62 and Vaughn came in right behind him at 7.66.
Other winners on the men’s side included freshman Matt Martina in the mile run (4:28.53), sophomore Jake Puusalu in the 500m run (1:06.13) and freshman Eric Cleckner in the long jump (6.50m) and in the triple jump (13.35m). The Syracuse ‘A’ team also emerged victorious in the 4x400m relay, recording a time of 3:31.26. The team consisted of senior Jake Palas, sophomore Mike Chitro, Cleckner and junior Terry Barresi.
On the women’s side, eight student-athletes emerged victorious, including junior Kathleen Sanborn in the mile run (5:07.49), sophomore Lauren McClenney in the 500m run (1:16.17), freshman Deanna Schmitt in the 1,000m run (3:09.48), senior Jill Kosinski in the 3,000m run (10:37.18), junior Jillian Drouin in the 55m hurdles (8.56), freshman Melissa Romero in the high jump (1.63m), Uhunoma Osazuma in the long jump (5.08m) and Kyra James in the shot put (12.78m).
The track and field teams resume action on Saturday, January 20 at the Upstate Challenge hosted by Cornell.
