Syracuse Picked Third in BIG EAST Preseason Poll; Two Named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team was picked third in the BIG EAST Conference preseason poll as selected by the league’s head coaches. Syracuse received 18 total votes, including one first-place vote. Senior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) and sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) were both named to the preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Fortune, a unanimous selection to the preseason team, recorded 50 points during the 2006 season including 47 goals, the second-highest total in team history. Fortune became the ninth player in school history to be collect All-American accolades in 2006, recognized on the third-team by the IWLCA. She was also named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team and was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
Rowan led the Orange in 2006 with 56 points, recording 46 goals and 10 assists. Her points total was the fourth-highest in school history while her 46 goals rank third in the SU record book. Both marks are also school records for a freshman. Rowan was the only freshman selected to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team and was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team in her rookie season.
Fortune and Rowan formed the most lethal one-two punch in school history last season, combining for 93 goals. The Orange returns a total of nine starters from a 2006 team that finished the year ranked 18th in the coaches poll.
Georgetown was picked to finish first, garnering four first-place votes and 24 total votes. The Hoyas were followed by Notre Dame, who received the other first place vote and 21 total votes. Loyola and Rutgers tied for fourth place and Connecticut was picked to finish sixth.
Syracuse opens the season at Dartmouth on Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. The Orange’s home opener is schedule for Feb. 28 against Albany. The game will begin at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
