The 2006-07 Syracuse University women’s basketball team has been propelled by three individuals; freshman Nicole Michael, junior Vaida Sipaviciute and junior Fantasia Goodwin. The Big Three have combined for 76.4 percent of the Orange’s points this season. Michael has scored 29.2 percent, Sipaviciute 24.4 percent and Goodwin 22.9 percent.
Michael recorded her fifth double-double of the season, posting 14 points and 10 rebounds at Notre Dame on Jan. 20. She also registered two assists and a steal in 33 minutes of action against the Fighting Irish. She has already earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades three times on Nov. 27, Dec. 4 and Jan. 9 was named the Most Valuable Player of the Brown Classic, hosted by Brown University on Dec. 2-3.
“As I’m concerned, she’s the best freshman in the country. Not in the conference; in the country,” said head coach Quentin Hillsman. “She brings it game in and game out. She takes punishment when she goes to the basket and she is an aggressive kid. I wouldn’t trade Nicole Michael for anyone on this planet right now because she really, really gets us going.”
Sipaviciute scored in double-figures for the 17th time with 14 points at Notre Dame on Jan. 20. She also grabbed six rebounds, blocks two shots and tallied one steal in her 31 minutes. The junior is 20th on Syracuse’s career scoring chart with 925 points.
“Vaida is the anchor of our offense and the anchor of our defense,” said Hillsman. “She has been giving us 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks per game all season. Vaida continues to show why she was an All-BIG EAST second team member last season.”
Goodwin led the Orange with a team-high 16 points at Notre Dame on Jan. 20. She also had five rebounds, two steals and one assist in 33 minutes versus the Irish. The junior has reached the double-figure plateau in four consecutive games (16, 11, 22, 16) and 14 of SU’s 20 games. Goodwin has already earned accolades this season by being named to Brown Classic All-Tournament and San Juan Shootout All-Tournament teams.
“Fantasia is a strong scoring guard who can really put the ball in the basket,” said Hillsman. “She finds a way to score and that is what good players and great scores do.”
The Big Three and the Orange face South Florida on Sunday. The game is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the Carrier Dome and can be seen live on ESPNU.
