Lipton Cracks Top Ten In Wins Against #37 Maryland

Syracuse, N.Y.- The Syracuse women’s tennis team lost to #37 Maryland, 6-1, to close out its opening weekend of the spring season. Senior Ashley Lipton won at No. 4 singles and moved into a tie for 10th place on Syracuse’s all-time wins list.
Lipton dispatched Elyse Steiner in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5), to give her 134 career victories at Syracuse. She is now tied with Amy Schiff and Shareen Lai for 10th on the school’s all-time wins list, one victory behind Sara Dickson for ninth place.
Syracuse lost the rest of the singles matches and the doubles point as Maryland carried over the momentum from its dual match win against Yale on Saturday. Junior Olga Votavova, who is ranked 28th in the East Region, lost to #13 Marianna Baker , 6-3. 6-3. Sophomore Maria Vasilyeva also lost to a regionally ranked player at No. 2. Vasilyeva was defeated by eighth-ranked Eleanor Peters, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Carolina Huignard split the first two sets at No. 5, but lost in a tiebreaker.
Syracuse was swept in doubles play. Votavova and Vasilyeva lost to Baker/Peters, the second-ranked doubles team in the East Region, at No. 1, 8-3.
Syracuse heads to North Carolina for a pair of matches next weekend. The Orange takes on #18 Wake Forest on Friday and Kansas on Saturday.
