As the month of October begins, six Syracuse teams completed action during the sixth week of the fall season. The Orange men and women’s cross country programs resumed action at the Paul Short Invitational with second and sixth-place finishes, respectively. The Syracuse field hockey team continues to roll after two wins against BIG EAST foe Georgetown and No. 12 American, and now boasts the team’s best record after 12 games (10-2) since the 2001 season. Junior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia collected a season-high seven saves on Sunday against No. 3 Connecticut as the Orange men's soccer team is now 4-3-3 overall and 1-3-0 in the BIG EAST. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish tallied a team-high 18 kills against Louisville and Cincinnati as SU enters its third week of BIG EAST play with a 10-8 overall mark and 1-2 record in the conference. The women’s soccer squad battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with No. 22 West Virginia.
Junior Jeff Scull’s eighth-place finish led the No. 26 Orange men to a second-place overall ranking at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday. Syracuse entered the meet with its first national ranking in program history before posting five times in the top 30 as it bested early-season Northeast Region favorite No. 4 Iona. The SU women finished sixth overall and were led by the 14th-place time of junior Nana Sang-Bender. Senior Liz Cufari and sophomore Maegan Krifchin finished 31st and 34th, respectively.

Freshman midfielder Maggie Befort’s two scores led the Orange to a 3-1 win against No. 12 American and set a record for goals scored (10) and tied the all-time mark for points (25) tallied by an SU rookie in a single-season. Senior Gloria Nantulya’s eighth goal of the season stood as the eventual game-winner and improved the Orange’s record to 10-2, the program’s best 12-game mark since 2001. Syracuse improved its record to 2-1 in BIG EAST play with a resounding 8-1 win against Georgetown on Friday. Six different SU players collected at least one goal while freshman Lelia Sacré and Befort each posted two. Goalkeeper Heather Hess stopped three shots in 55 minutes of action.

Sophomore Hansen Woodruff’s seventh goal of the season wasn’t enough as Providence posted a 3-1 BIG EAST win against the Orange on Friday. Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev made his first career Syracuse start against the Friars and tallied one assist. Junior Robert Cavicchia collected a season-best seven saves as SU lost a 1-0 decision at No. 3 Connecticut on Sunday.

Sophomore Kacie MacTavish powered the Orange offense with 11 kills in Syracuse’s 3-0 loss at Louisville on Saturday. Sophomore Samantha Ainsworth led the Orange with 22 assists as senior Joscie Kaup collected a team-best 11 digs against the Cardinals. Sophomore Sarah Morton’s team-best 11 total blocks paced the SU defense in a 3-0 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday. Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis posted a team-high 10 kills and Ainsworth totaled a club-best 30 assists versus the Bearcats.

Freshman Megan Bellingham’s goal was the Orange’s lone tally in a 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Friday. Sophomore Chelsea Berry’s cross set-up Bellingham’s score and cut the Panthers’ lead in half. Sophomore Eliza Bennett-Hatten collected four saves in goal. Bennett-Hatten tallied nine saves and junior Sarah VanSickle scored her first goal of the season as the Orange played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with No. 22 West Virginia on Sunday. Junior Lauren Cappelli started her 50th consecutive game against the Moutaineers.
