Home Sweet Home: Orange Opens Eight-Match Homestand Friday with USF

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse volleyball team (10-8, 1-2) will look to defend its unbeaten record at home when it returns to the friendly-confines of Manley Field House for a season-long eight-match homestand beginning Friday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. against South Florida. The Orange meets Georgetown on Sunday, October 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the final match of the 2007 season inside Manley Field House. Syracuse’s BIG EAST battle with DePaul on Friday, October 12 marks the first contest of the season played in the Women’s Building.
Orange All-Access
Syracuse’s BIG EAST battle with Georgetown on Sunday, October 7 will be the third and final match of the 2007 season that is broadcasted live via Orange All Access. OAA can be found via the Orange’s official athletic website, suathletics.com. OAA subscriptions are $9.95 per month or $79.95 per year.

Orange Rewind
Syracuse is coming off of back-to-back BIG EAST losses at Louisville and Cincinnati. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish powered the Orange offense with a team-high 11 kills against the Cardinals. Sophomore Samantha Ainsworth collected a team-best 22 assists as senior Joscie Kaup led SU with 14 digs.
Sophomore Sarah Morton, who earned BIG EAST Honor Roll recognition last Monday, paired a team-high 11 total blocks with six kills against the Bearcats. Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis buried a team-best 10 kills as Ainsworth posted 30 assists. Kaup’s 11 digs were a Syracuse-best.
Scouting the Bulls (8-4, 1-2)
Syracuse vs. USF, October 5 at 7:00 p.m.
The Bulls arrive in Manley Field House after defeating Rutgers for their first BIG EAST win of the season. USF entered conference-play riding an eight-match win streak before meeting Louisville and Cincinnati on the opening weekend.
In the Bulls’ win over the Scarlet Knights, Kristina Fabris led the offensive attack with a 17 kill-12 dig double-double. Marcela Gurgel contributed 16 kills for USF. Brittany Castelamare powered the Bulls’ offense with a club-best 29 assists. Stephanie Augustavo paced the USF defense with a team-high 13 digs while Nakia Williams collected five total blocks.
Thus far in 2007, Gurgel leads all Bulls with 208 kills while Mariana Thon has posted a team-high 287 assists. Alli Arbogast has collected a club-high 79 total blocks while Augustavo has totaled a team-best 190 digs.
All-time, USF holds a 2-3 series advantage over Syracuse. The Orange’s last win, a three-game sweep, came in 2005. The Bulls captured a 3-0 win in 2006.
Scouting the Hoyas (4-13, 0-3)
Syracuse vs. Georgetown, October 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Georgetown enters the BIG EAST weekend on a four-match losing streak. The Hoyas meet Marquette on Friday, October 5 before arriving in Syracuse.
In Georgetown’s last win against Mercer, Jessica Hardy led all Hoyas with 19 kills while Caitlin Boland tallied a team-best 62 assists. Defensively, Hardy paced the Georgetown backline with 18 digs. Three Hoyas, including Hardy, registered four total blocks.
Thus far in 2007, Jessica Buffum has powered the Hoyas’ attack with 340 kills while Boland has totaled a club-leading 640 assists. Katie Nulty leads Georgetown with 291 digs while Annie Connor has posted a team-high 99 blocks.
All-time, Syracuse holds an 18-16 series advantage against Georgetown. Syracuse has won four straight decisions, including a five-game win in 2006. The Hoyas’ last win, a 3-1 final, came in 2002.
What’s Ahead
Following SU’s conference tilts with USF and Georgetown, the Orange remains at home and continues BIG EAST play against DePaul on October 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Notre Dame on October 14 at 2:00 p.m.
